The word "Panama" originates from the time when the country was united with Colombia, and its meaning is "abundance of fish, trees and butterflies."

Panama - a bridge between two continents, created by nature itself. Tropical jungle unites animals and plants from two continents. 954 species of birds(more than in all of North America), plus hundreds of them migrating, 225 species of mammals, 214 species of reptiles, 143 species of amphibians, more than 10,000 types plants, including 1,200 orchids, 678 of ferns and 1,500 of the trees.

More than 29% of the country’s territories are national parks, forest and wildlife preserves.

In the highlands of Chiriquí you may often encounter Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno). It has iridescent green and red plumage and is considered one of the most beautiful birds of the New World. The jungles of Darien are inhabited by the largest bird predator -Harpy eagle.

Cordillera mountain range, Cerro Azul, moist forest areas of Baru volcano (Barú Volcano), and the Oil Pipeline Road - all these areas are known worldwide for a rich variety of bird species. The nature reserve Barro Colorado is also a scientific laboratory for biological research of Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution (STRI).

The territory of Panama, despite its relatively small size is densely covered by protected areas.

National Park Metropolitano

National Park Soberanía

National Park Camino de Cruces

The name of this park comes from colonial times. The park passes  along the "Transístmico" highway, which goes through the same way, which Spaniards used 400 years ago. The park serves as a biological corridor between the National Parks of Metropolitano and Sobreania.

Portobelo National Park

2 hours drive from the city. This park is rich not only in nature, but also its cultural content. Explore the castles, built in ancient times to protect the city from pirates or find the spots where pirates used to hide their treasures.

Barro Colorado

Barro Colorado - is an island located on Gatun lake (the area of the Panama Canal). For many years here Smithsonian institute continuously conducts research. This is a natural laboratory, where important discoveries are made almost every day.
