Changes in migration policy for tourists residing in Panama

Foreigners living in Panama now must leave the country for a month if they want to re-enter Panama again. This and few other restrictions were recently announced by Javier Carrillo, the Director of Emigration Authority.

The new measure only applies to those foreign visitors, who live in Panama as tourists. Upon living in Panama five months, they have to leave the country for one month in order to stay in Panama another 5 months, explained Javier.

Until now the law stated that foreigners with a tourist visa have a limit of six months, but once the deadline was close, a lot of them crossed border with Costa Rica just to receive another stamp in the passport. “Visa Run” has become a common occurrence among many of such residents. Until now such stamp allowed to freely reside in Panama for another six month, but not any longer.

Finally, visitors who stayed in Panama briefly and then want to re-enter will not be affected.
